In defence of Shere Khan

Let me start by expressing how good the new CGI film actually is. It is truly cutting edge visuals, great voice casting and a wonderful, timeless story (from Mr. Kipling of course). However, in the spirit of being a miserable old git, which I am of course, there are just a few things which don’t sit right with me whatsoever. The moral and geographical continuity of this film is just off. It’s not good, it’s bad, it’s not right and I’ll tell you exactly why. There is an unsung hero of this film, a martyr of the jungle if you will, his name, Shere Khan.

As the cartels start using bombs to terrorise police, FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) gets called up to go beyond the line to assist the smurking Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and his narrow eyed partner Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro).

Girlhood

Not Boyhood for Girls     

“Girlhood” charts a young girl’s journey of self-discovery through a society with little hope of escape. Rejected by school and abused at home, Marieme joins a girls’ gang and reinvents herself within her new found community. Along with her three spirited companions, Marieme finds joy and adventure by embracing her new alter-ego: “Vic”. All is not as it seems however, and the violence, patriarchy and social disenfranchisement is, under the surface, a prominent part of Marieme and the community she is attached to.

John Wick

He’s back, people keep saying he’s back, let me tell you again: he’s back! 

John Wick is a man who loved his wife, now deceased, then he loved his car, now stolen, and he really loved his dog, now murdered. This action revenge thriller consequently leads us into the classy, but very, very deranged world of the criminal society. Stylish, brooding, and with a smudge of cheese; John Wick is the action film to beat this year; as we see a one man army shoot, bludgeon and grimace his way through a litany of Russian-American body bags. This is gruesome adventure is beautifully shot within an intriguing, if somewhat teased, setting where Assassins and criminals form their own underground society.

Mad Max: Fury Road

A man can’t steal a bunch of women from another man:

George Miller impresses with his inventive, weird and wonderfully mythologized film of an Australia turned bad. Proving once and for all you can make a blockbuster with all the freakish nuclear raddled crazies you possibly can; you just need a couple big big stars and a whole lot of explosions to accompany them. Regardless of whether you have a gripe with this tendency towards the extended-extended explosive set-piece Fury Road is an experience destined to excite and, hopefully, defy expectations.
