Halloween Ends

Happy Halloween! Here is my review of Halloween Ends, the thirteenth installment in the Halloween franchise and final film in David Gordon Green’s own Halloween trilogy that is a direct follow-up to the original 1978 classic; ignoring all the sequels. Thanks to the huge success of 2018’s Halloween, Halloween Ends was already planned even before the previous film, Halloween Kills, had been made. Kills garnered a mixed reception from critics due to its lack of story, but general audiences lapped up the hardcore violence as Michael Myers brutally cut a bloody swathe through Haddonfield like no one had ever seen him do before! This time we pick up four years later when Michael resurfaces after vanishing following the previous films events. Laurie Strode faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil in a final confrontation.

The Last Duel

Ridley Scott's 'The Last Duel': An Enjoyably Ripe Slab Of Historical Hokum That Proves Men Have Been Awful For At Least 7 Centuries [Venice Review]

The Last Duel is an epic and thought provoking historical drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War. Ridley Scott explores the unquestioned power of men in Medieval Europe, the frailty of justice and, most of all, the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the quest for justice against seemingly impossible odds. The Last Duel is based on the 2004 book of the same name by Eric Jager, which is itself based on actual events surrounding the last sanctioned duel in France between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques le Gris, two friends and comrades in arms who became bitter rivals. Both have clashing personalities, Carrouges is a respected and martial knight renowned for his bravery and skill in battle. Le Gris is a squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him an admired noble in the court. When Carrouge’s wife, Margerite, is assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent and steps forward to ensure justice is done despite knowingly putting her life in jeopardy. The fate of all three are placed in God’s hands by the ensuing trial by combat.

Halloween Kills

Halloween Kills is the Franchise's Best Sequel in Rotten Tomatoes (Despite Bad Score)

On All Hallows Eve, ready for Halloween itself, I bring to you my review of Halloween Kills, the twelfth instalment of the Halloween franchise, the horror series most closely connected with the Halloween season. Halloween Kills is a direct follow-up to the 2018 Halloween, directed and co-written by David Gordon Green, that breathed life into a stagnant and messy franchise. Halloween (2018) was a direct sequel to the original horror masterpiece and was so popular and successful that Green has been able to plan another two films to form a Halloween trilogy of his own. Having wiped the slate clean of all the sequels, Halloween was a fresh start and was met with praise from both the critics and general audience, it is widely considered to be the best sequel of the series for returning to basics and executing it so well. Green purposefully left the ending open for potential sequels, so would have been delighted to continue his own Michael Myers mythology.

Halloween: Origins & Traditions - HISTORY

For the third edition of Horrorthon 2021 I introduce you to three lesser known horrors. A Korean zombie horror film that cleverly refreshes the overcrowded zombie subgenre like no other, then an interesting, high brow yet blood soaked, spin on the similarly crowded vampire subgenre and a deeply disturbing chiller about faith, sanity and sin through the eyes of a lonely and tragic character.

Watch Tales of Halloween | Prime Video

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! Here is the final post of my 2020 October Horrothon series, I have watched some fantastic new horrors in the lead-up to Halloween and here are the last four I would recommend. I review a particularly unsettling and grim bio-horror with an imaginative concept, an interesting spin on the found-footage supernatural horror genre sure to scare even the hardiest horror fans, a horror anthology film that mixes good old-fashioned horror with some post-modern twists and finally another anthology horror film boasting a number of both funny and scary short stores all set on Halloween night.
